Roundstone in Connemara

The village of Roundstone in Connemara lies on the atlantic coast, at the foot of Errisbeg Mountain. It has one of the most beautiful little harbours in all of  County Galway.

The views are breathtaking, on a clear day you can see all the way across the bay to the summits of the Twelve Pins mountain range in the distance.

Roundstone is famous the world over for its Bodhráns - that´s the ancient irish drum made of goatskin. You can watch Ireland´s master bodhrán maker Malachy Kearns crafting and handpainting his drums at the "Music and Crafts Center" in an old franciscan monastery, just outside the village. There´s also the occasional workshop where you can learn how to make this traditional irish instrument. Next to the Centre there´s a pottery and a craft shop with a little coffeeshop and an outdoor picnic area.

Roundstone is very popular with artists and crafts people. Jack B. Yeats for example, the famous painter and brother of  poet William Butler Yeats spent some summer months in Roundstone painting the fishing boats in the harbour, as well as the surrounding countryside. Over the years many creative minds have settled here, there´s great Galleries and Art Studios in the village you can visit. You will also find quaint little shops, lovely restaurants, cafés and pubs in town.

Das Dörfchen Roundstone in Connemara liegt direkt an der Atlantik Küste, zu Füßen des Errisbeg Mountains. Es hat einen der schönsten Häfen der Grafschaft Galway. Das Panorama ist atemberaubend, an einem klaren Tag kann man über die Bucht bis zu den Gipfeln der Twelve Ben Bergkette in der Ferne sehen.

Roundstone ist weltbekannt für seine Bodhráns - das sind die historischen irischen Trommeln aus Ziegenhaut. Man kann dem Meister der Bodhrán Herstellung Malachy Kearns bei der Fertigung und Handbemalung seiner Trommeln im "Music and Craft Centre" über die Schulter schauen. Das Centre liegt außerhalb des Dorfes in einem ehemaligen Franziskaner Kloster. Dort werden auch regelmäßig Workshops angeboten, wo man lernen kann, wie dieses traditionelle irische Instrument angefertigt wird. Nebenan gibt es eine Töpferei und einen Kunsthandwerksladen mit einem Café und Picnic Tischen im Hof.

Roundstone ist bei Künstlern und Kunsthandwerkern sehr beliebt. Jack B. Yeats zum Beispiel, der bekannte Maler und Bruder des berühmten Dichters William Butler Yeats, hat seinerzeit einige Sommermonate in Roundstone verbracht und dort die Fischerboote im Hafen, aber auch die umliegenden Landschaften gemalt. 

Im Laufe der Jahre haben sich viele kreative Köpfe hier niedergelassen, es gibt tolle Gallerien und Kunst Werkstätten, die man besuchen kann. Man findet aber auch malerische kleine Läden, nette Restaurants, Cafés und Pubs im Dorf.
