Killary Harbour

Here are a few Impressions of Killary Harbour, which isn´t really a harbour, but rather a genuine fjord forming the border of  County Galway and County Mayo in the West of Ireland.

Mwreelrea Mountains

The fjord is 16 kilometres long and over 45 metres deep with impressive mountain ranges rising on both shores. The Mwreelrea Mountains on the Mayo side (the north side of the fjord) are more than 800 metres high, to the south the Maamturk mountain range (a bit shy of 700 metres high) stretches all the way across Connemara to the Inagh Valley.

 Strong tidal currents make the waters ideal for mussel farming, you can see the rafts stringing out all along the fjord.
The area around Killary Harbour is perfect not just for hiking, but any kind of outdoor activity. There´s a great Outdoor Adventure Centre and hostel located about 5 kilometres west of Leenane on the southern shore of the fjord, where you can try out all sorts of outdoorsy and watery sports - kajaking, sailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, hill walking, orienteering, gorge walking, rock climbing and abseiling, even bunjee jumping!

Killary Harbour is a unique place, especially when the fogs are creeping in from the Atlantic and the surrounding mountains are shrouded in mist, creating a pretty dramatic mood.

Maamturk Mountain Range

Hier sind einige Eindrücke von Killary Harbour, der eigentlich gar kein Hafen sondern ein waschechter Fjord ist und die natürliche Grenze zwischen den Grafschaften Galway und Mayo im Westen Irlands bildet.

Der Fjord ist 16 Kilometer lang und über 45 Meter tief, an beiden Ufern erheben sich beeindruckende Berghänge. Die Mweelrea Mountains an der Mayo Seite im Norden sind über 800 Meter hoch, im Süden erstreckt sich die Maamturk Bergkette (nicht ganz 700 Meter hoch) quer durch Connemara bis zum Inagh Valley. 

Mussel farms

Durch die starke Gezeitenstömung sind die Gewässer ideal für die Muschelzucht, entlang des Fjords reihen sich die schwimmenden Flossbänke wie Perlenketten aneinander. 

Die Gegend um Killary Harbour ist nicht nur perfekt für Wanderungen, sondern für alle Aktivitäten in der freien Natur. Ungefähr fünf Kilometer westlich von Leenane gibts ein tolles Outdoor Centre und Hostel, wo man alle möglichen Freizeit- und Wassersportarten ausprobieren kann - Kajaking, Segeln, Wasserskifahren, Wakeboarden, Windsurfen, Wandern, Orienteering, Canyoning, Klettern und sogar Bunjee-Jumping!

Killary Harbour ist ein einzigartiger Ort - vor allem wenn Nebelschleier vom Atlantik hereinziehen und die umliegenden Berggipfel verhüllen macht sich eine dramatisch-düstere Stimmung breit.
