A walk around Ardmore, Co Waterford

A few impressions of Ardmore - a little seaside village on the south-east coast of Ireland, where the Celtic Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Join me on a stroll around town with its ancient sacred sites, medieval monuments, colourful houses, down to the beautiful beach and up the surrounding cliffs.

From the beach we walk up to Main Street with its colourful houses and Pubs:

 

 

 

From Main Street we turn left and walk up Tower Hill. We pass beautiful ivy-clad houses and medieval St. Paul´s Church, but we keep walking up all the way to the top of the hill...

...until we reach the old graveyard and Round Tower. Great views from up there! The Cathedral was built on the site of the first christian monastic settlement in all of Ireland founded by St. Declan c. 412 AD.

We keep walking uphill following the sign saying "Cliff Walk". After a few minutes we reach a little boreen that will bring us out to the cliff trail. The loop walk around the Ardmore Head takes about an hour and is definately worth it, there´s lots to see along the way!

The cliff walk ends at St. Declan´s Holy Well and Erimitage. A nice place for a break.

The path back to town

Behind St. Declan´s Well the path leads back into town, past Ardmore Pottery´s shop and Gallery and the Cliff House Hotel. Walk along the Harbour wall and you get back to Main Street and the start of our tour, the beach. Now you deserve yourself a nice pint in one of the pubs on Main Street! Slainté!

Ein paar Impressionen von Ardmore - ein kleines Dorf am Meer an der Süd-Ost Küste Irlands, wo die Keltische See auf den Atlantik trifft. Kommt mit auf einen Spaziergang durch das Dorf mit seinen alten sakralen Stätten, mittelalterlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten, bunten Häusern, bis hinunter zum wunderschönen Strand und hinauf auf die umliegenden Klippen.

Beginnen wir die Tour am schönen Strand.

Vom Strand spazieren wir hinauf auf die Main Street mit ihren bunten Häusern und Pubs.

Von der Main Street biegen wir links den Tower Hill hinauf. Vorbei an Efeu umrankten Häusern und der mittelalterlichen St. Paul´s Church, immer weiter den Hügel aufwärts...
...bis wir den alten Friedhof mit dem Rundturm erreicht haben. Die Aussicht ist großartig von hier oben! Die Kirche wurde an der Stelle des ersten christlichen Klosters in Irland erbaut, gegründet vom Hl. Declan ca. 412 n. Chr.

Hinterm Friedhof führt die Straße weiter bergauf, wir folgen dem Schild "Cliff Walk". Nach ein paar Minuten erreichen wir einen kleinen Feldweg, der uns zum Klippen Wanderweg führt. Der Rundweg um Ardmore Head dauert ca. eine Stunde und ist auf jeden Fall empfehlenswert, unterwegs gibt es eine Menge zu sehen!

Der Rundweg endet bei der St. Declan´s Quelle und Einsiedelei. Ein schöner Platz für eine Rast.

Hinter der Quelle führt der Weg weiter hinunter Richtung Stadt, vorbei an der Ardmore Pottery und Gallery und dem Cliff House Hotel. Entlang der Hafenmauer geht´s zurück zur Main Street und dem Ausgangspunkt der Tour, dem Strand. Jetzt habt ihr euch aber ein schönes Pint in einem der Pubs verdient! Slainté!
